This dynamic shot of a heron (also know as an “Egret”) was a lucky one for me. This bird lives in a quiet neighborhood here in Takasaki, Japan. I had taken shots of it before; holding my camera up to my eye for 20 minutes at a time, waiting for it to stop preening and take flight. On this day, however, I had just gotten into position and starting to look through the lens when it took flight. I only had time for one hasty shot. The result was that it ended up being off center and in the lower left portion of the frame. To make matters worst, the tips of its right wing were cut off! After I moved through my disappointment, I realized that it might be possible to follow suit and crop tightly all the way around. It was and I did and I love the result! To me, the tight framing gives the image a more dynamic “breaking out” energy.
